Pools & Outdoor Living in Costa Rica
In this climate the outdoor space is the house — it is where you eat, work, and spend the evening, and on a rental it is the photo that gets the booking. It is also the part most exposed to salt, sun, and slope, so it is the part that most rewards being engineered properly.
We design and build pools, decks, ranchos, pergolas, and outdoor kitchens as part of a home project or as a standalone build, with the structure, waterproofing, and drainage detailed for the site and the same fixed-scope contract we use everywhere.

What's included
Every pools & outdoor living project is scoped in writing before we start. Here is what that scope covers.
Custom and plunge pools
Reinforced concrete pools shaped to the lot — an infinity edge on a slope, a plunge pool on a small lot, a lap pool for a larger house. Built with the shell, hydraulics, and finish detailed for ground movement and coastal water chemistry.
- Reinforced shell engineered for the soil and slope
- Infinity, plunge, lap, and freeform designs
- Full equipment: pump, filter, heating, saltwater or dosing
- Tile, plaster, or exposed-aggregate finishes
Decks and terraces
Tropical hardwood, composite, porcelain pavers, or polished concrete — chosen for the exposure and the maintenance you want to sign up for. Substructure in treated timber or steel, detailed to drain and to breathe.
- Tropical hardwood and composite decking
- Porcelain-paver and concrete terraces
- Ventilated, drained substructure
- Integrated steps, benches, and planters
Ranchos, pergolas, and shade
The traditional rancho with a tiled or thatch roof, a steel-and-timber pergola, or a louvered roof you can adjust — engineered for wind uplift and built to last in the weather it exists to block.
- Timber or steel-framed ranchos
- Fixed and adjustable-louver pergolas
- Structural design for wind uplift
- Traditional teja or thatch roofing
Outdoor kitchens and bars
A built-in grill, counter, sink, fridge, and storage in materials that live outdoors — stainless, stone, porcelain, and marine-grade cabinetry — plumbed and wired to code.
- Masonry or stainless cabinetry
- Grill, sink, fridge, and storage
- Stone or porcelain counters
- Code-compliant gas, water, and power
Lighting, landscape, and finishing
Low-voltage landscape lighting, path and step lighting for safety, an outdoor shower, and drought-tolerant planting that frames the space without a heavy watering bill.
- Low-voltage landscape and step lighting
- Outdoor shower and foot-wash
- Drought-tolerant, low-maintenance planting
- Irrigation where planting needs it
How a pools & outdoor living project runs
A defined process is what lets you run this from another country with confidence.
Site and use review
How you want to use the space, the sun and wind on the lot, the slope, and the soil — the inputs that decide what is worth building and where.
Design and fixed quote
A layout, sections, and a line-item quote. For pools this includes the engineered shell design and the full equipment schedule.
Permits where needed
Pools and roofed structures generally need CFIA registration and a municipal permit. We file them.
Build
Excavation and structure first, then hydraulics and services, then finishes and planting — with photo updates throughout.
Handover and care
Commissioning, a walkthrough of the equipment, and an optional spot on a maintenance plan so the pool and timber stay right.
What it costs
Outdoor work is priced by structure and finish. A pool's cost is driven by the shell engineering (slope and soil), the size, and the finish; decks and structures by the material and the substructure the site needs. Because the site drives the number, every pool and structure is quoted after a site visit.
| Plunge pool | Fixed quote after site visit | Compact reinforced pool with full equipment. |
| Custom pool | Engineered and quoted to site | Larger or infinity-edge pools; slope and soil move the number most. |
| Deck / terrace | Priced per m² by material | Varies with material — hardwood, composite, porcelain, concrete. |
| Rancho / pergola / outdoor kitchen | Quoted by design | Priced from the layout; often bundled with a pool or deck project. |
Where no figure is listed, the site and scope set the price, so we quote after a visit rather than publish a number that changes later. Every quote breaks the total into structure, electromechanical, finishes, and permits, so you compare real scope rather than a headline price that grows later.

Why owners choose Costa Rica Builders
Engineered for the site, not a catalog
A pool on a Guanacaste hillside is a structural project. We design the shell to the soil report and the slope, so it does not crack when the ground moves in the first green season.
Built for salt and sun
Every material and fixing is chosen for coastal exposure. It is the difference between a deck you re-oil and a deck you replace.
One contract with the house
When the outdoor work is part of a build or remodel, it is in the same fixed-scope contract — not a vague phase two that gets value-engineered away.
It earns on a rental
We build outdoor space that photographs well and holds up to guests, because on a short-term rental it is the single biggest driver of rate and bookings.
Pools & Outdoor Living: frequently asked questions
How much does a pool cost in Costa Rica?+
We price every pool after seeing the site, because the number is driven mostly by the shell engineering the slope and soil demand, the size, and the finish. A compact plunge pool sits at the lower end; a larger custom or infinity pool ranges higher. The quote separates the engineered shell, the hydraulics and equipment, and the finish so you can see what drives the price.
Do I need a permit to build a pool or a rancho?+
Generally yes. Pools and roofed structures like ranchos and pergolas normally require CFIA registration and a municipal building permit, and a pool needs an engineered structural design. We handle the filing as part of the project.
What decking material lasts best on the coast?+
It is a trade-off between look and maintenance. Tropical hardwoods are beautiful and repairable but need re-oiling; quality composite and porcelain pavers cost more up front and need almost nothing. We will match the material to how much maintenance you actually want to sign up for.
Can you build a pool on a steep lot?+
Yes — it is common here and it is a structural design problem, not a reason to say no. Infinity edges exist because of slope. We design the shell, the retaining, and the deck structure to the soil study so it is stable long term.
Can you add outdoor living to a house you didn't build?+
Yes. We survey the existing structure and levels, design the addition to tie in properly, handle any permit, and build it to the same standard. This is a common standalone project for us.
Will you maintain the pool and deck afterward?+
If you want us to. The pool equipment, water chemistry, and exterior timber can go on one of our maintenance plans, serviced on the right interval by the team that built them.
